Cooking with Poo

Today, Andrew and I cooked with Poo.

First off, you should know, this is Poo:

Poo is from the Klong Toey area in Bangkok.  She grew up in a slum, but has now started her own business teaching how to cook Thai food while also using her success to support her community.  We started the morning with a tour of the Klong Toey market, which is a very large market and supplies food to most of Bangkok.  The market opens every day at 2am, and overnight is its busiest time, when the food is the most fresh.

Many markets sell fried insects:

Rice:

Dragon fruit:

Curry pastes:

Next, we went to Poo's kitchen in the Klong Toey slum where we had the opportunity to cook a few Thai dishes:

We started out by making a rice noodle and chicken stir fry:

Our second dish was cashew beef:

Third, we were able to participate in making a curry paste, which we used to make a chicken green curry soup:

As if we hadn't eaten enough already, dessert was mango sticky rice, one of the most popular desserts in Thailand, and a variety of local fruits:

We had a great time cooking with Poo and would highly recommend it to anyone in Thailand (although we also recommend you don't eat breakfast beforehand...)
