On Saturday, we drove up to Mackinac City. Upon arriving, we explored a bit, read a bit about local culture, learned we were highly encouraged to try three local foods (whitefish, fudge, and pasties), found some whitefish to share, and took a boat tour on a 1970s Maine lobster boat that took us underneath the Mackinac Bridge.
Saturday morning, we rose early and took the ferry from St Ignace to Mackinac Island.
We spent the morning exploring the island by bike, first by biking around the perimeter of the island, enjoying beautiful views and clear, blue water, and later by climbing the hills of the island and touring the trails up top.
Following lunch, we toured Fort Mackinac and learned more about the history of this little, picturesque island.
This was followed by an impromptu concert on the lawn and a scheduled parade to finish off a week-long Lilac Festival on the island. We were delighted to find that our friends from the Glen Erin Pipe Band had come to play their bagpipes for us!
As the afternoon progressed, we became increasingly disappointed in our decision to leave our sweatshirts in the car (at 8:30am when it was sunny and in the low 60s, we figured they'd be a burden to have to carry with us all day). As the clouds came in, temperatures dropped into the mid-50s, and winds were gusting up to 40 mph, we figured it was a good time to purchase some fudge, and take the ferry back to our sweatshirts. We picked up some local pasties on the way back to our cabin and enjoyed them with some Grand Traverse Cherry Riesling while warming up.
On Monday, our actual anniversary, we drove home and celebrated by dressing up and having dinner together at Rose's on Reeds Lake, one of our favorite restaurants.
The weekend was a lovely, refreshing time of enjoying our friendship and marriage.
